Self-Expression Through Dance

Acrobatic solos allowed me to showcase my strength and express my interpretation of different movements.

Each year from 2020 to 2022, I prepared a piece of Acro solo in my studio for competitions. Choosing different styles of music each year and learning with two coaches, I experimented various ways of pushing outside my comfort zone. In 2020, my solo piece We've Never Met used a music without any lyrics. That presented a challenge for me to really "catch the beats" and pushed me to give each section of the music my own interpretation. The 2021 piece was a more traditional form of Contemporary Acro choreography. The challenge was more about the execution of different sections of the dance. It was my second year doing a solo piece with Miss.Amie Rigby, who understood my capabilities and pushed my out of my comfort zone. In 2022, I did a more Jazzy Acrobatic piece with Miss. Shannon May. The music used in this piece was smooth Jazz, where there was no distinct beats to follow. This piece is faster than previous solos and required more physical strength as well. In winter 2021, I also performed a dance solo for the first time in my school. In front of hundreds of students my age and cameras that shared live-streams to classes that stayed in their classrooms for the show, I presented a piece in which I choreographed only a week ago. This nerve-racking experience made me more confident in my future showcases.
